planning

Target Audience:

My target audience is going to be those who are in the 15-27 age bracket who like Pop and RnB music. This is because my research survey has shown that this is the age bracket who mostly buy music magazines, this is a result of them having the most free time and disposable income. RnB and Pop music were most popular in my survey and this connects back to the age bracket I am Aiming at because it is a popular genre of music with younger people. Also in my research I had a equal split between males and females, because of this I have decided to Aim my target audience to both genders rather than just making it either masculine or feminine.

1:
When creating this logo I stuck to the colour connotations of red because of what it represents which is things such as sexiness and lust, things that I want my magazine to contain. The stars also represent the idea of stardom which will be heavily depended on in my magazine because it will contain musical stars to create reader interest. However I have chosen not to use this as my logo because I feel it is not as fully developed as others.

2:
I created this logo in a bold font called 'Tahoma' and made the edges square so that it stood out and was recognisable. The colour also stands out as it is block red on a white background, this suggests that there is no inbetween. This ensures the reader thet they are going to get exactly what they expect and no inbetween which many mainstream consumers like. I chose not to use this logo in the end because compared to the one I am using it is very simplistic and not so eye catching. also it is very similar to the Logo of NME magazine and Q magazine.

3:
Here I have developed the logo to have a black background, I did this because I thought that it would make the name of the magazine stand out more on the front cover and gain a bigger reader interest. But when looking at it again i decided not to go for this one because it has more connotations with the indie or rock genre.

4:
I have chosen to use this logo because it is of a much higher standard than the ones I previously created. The word Rumour is inside the lips because rumours are associated as being stories spoken by others in gossip. The lips are red which has connotations of sexiness, passion and energy, all things that I want to present in my magazine to make it sucessfull. The name of the magazine has been written in the font 'Tahoma', after testing out a number of fonts I went with this one because it looked similar to toher successful magazines such as 'NME'. But it also seemed to fit into the RnB and pop music genre, therefore I decided this was the right one.  I believe this is a very recognisable logo that many consumers will be able to associate with the magazine's contents, therefore making it one that people will purposely go out to purchase.

Images for my magazine:

Shot type: Medium shot.

Description: The image follows the rule of two thirds because she is sat on the left hand side with a margin of blank space to the right. When taking the image I set it up this way to create space on the right hand side, this was to ensure that there was sufficient space for me to add text such as cover lines and puffs. The Cover star is in direct mode of address, again this was done on purpose to create a sense of connection between the consumer and the magazine. This style can encourage consumers to buy the magazine because they feel a sense of involvement with the star and the exclusivity of the article inside.
Editing: In the editing process I croppped this Image so that the outline of the star was close to the edge, I did this because I knew That this image would probably be used on my front cover. Therefore by cropping it this way the image became clean cut and more acceptable as a successful front cover.

Also in the editing Process I cut out the cover star and placed her onto a white background, this is because the colour scheme of my magazine is white and so by using her as a layer it was easier to place her on the cover this way. This way I was also able to intergrate the cover star in with the magazine logo, which is a main feature in successful magazines.
Shot type: Medium Close up

Description: This image has been taken a short distance away from the star, the shot was set up this way to give closer detail of her so that the consumer would have a greater interest and connection with her. This shot was also taken on location, this being the beach, which adds a greater depth to the image because it can convey a message about the star such as places they like. By doing this it gives a greater sense of exclusivity to the article because it is like an in-depth analysis of the star, and articles like this have been proven to creater a greater reader interest. There is also enough space above her head so that if I used this picture on one of my artifacts I could place a masthead above her.

Editing: In the editing process the colours have been contrasted to give the image a warmer feel, By doing this the image will appear more appealing to the consumer and therefore they will be more likely to pick it up. Also by doing this it emphasises her hair and facial features, this would create a greater reader interest. Mainly as a sexual attraction, because it also brings emphasis upon her womanly features.

Shot type: Long shot

Description: This image is very much about the location the star is in, by placing her in a long shot it clearly shows the sea behind her and the horizon. The horizon could indicate the meaning behind the image and link into the article, this could be that the horizon is where the star is heading for and will create reader interest. The star is purposely in a pose that shows off her female features, such as her cardigan being slightly off her shoulder highlights sexual attraction that can interest or gain consumers. Again she is looking directly down the camera which generates a direct mode of address with the reader, making them feel in contact with the star so that there is a more exclusive feel about the article. I also made sure that in this shot there was a margin of space abover her head so that I could place a masthead there if I decided to use this as my main cover image. Also there is space either side of her so that I could place anchorage text or puffs in there that would create reader interest.

Editing: In the editing process I emphasized the colour of the cover stars hair by warming up the colours to make it look firey, this is to add sexiness to the female which will increase sales of the magazine. Also the background has been made to look misty to bring out the star from the image, this gives the image a feeling of layers.

Shot type: Medium shot

Description: In this medium shot the star is taking up the whole centre of the frame from top to bottom, having space either side of her would enable me to place cover lines and puffs around her making her the central focus. She has purposely stood in this pose because it makes her more appealing to the consumer, by doing this it adds a sense of sexiness to her compared to her standing straight with her arms in a awkward position. Again the cardigan is off her shoulder and her top is revealing her stomach, this adds sexual attraction to the image which would boost sales. She is also in a direct mode of address by looking down the camera, by doing this she is connecting with the reader making the article more personal.

Editing: The only editing carried out on this image was cropping, that was because on the left hand side the groins on the beach was just creeping into the picture. Other than that I liked the colours and contrast of the picture as it was, I also liked it that you could see a faint shadow on the sand of the star.

Shot type: Medium shot/ wide shot

Description: Out of all the photgraphs I took this one was my favourite, This picture has a very personal feel to it and also it has been set up well. By using the rule of two thirds the star has been placed over on the far left leaving a large majority of the image free. Doing this meant that I could use this image as my double page spread because there is enough space to fit in a whole article. This image is very artistic rather than being a posed shot, although she isnt in a direct mode of address because she has her back to the camera it still makes you feel in contact with the star because she's not to far away.

Editing: In the editing process the colours have been made warmer, so much so that the white waves really stand out in this image. The horizon has been made misty to bring focus back to the star, and the star has also been made to look more in focus compared to the rest of the image.

Shot type: medium shot

Description: This shot has been set up to create a connection between the reader and the cover star. This is because she is posed in a position that conveys a sense of sexiness but also she is staring straight at the camera in direct mode of address. The star has space above her head for a logo or a masthead, but she also has space either side of her for anchorage text and puffs. All you can see behind her is the horizon which draws focus onto her, this can also be because she is directly in the centre of the image.

Editing: During the editing process I cropped this photo to bring the star into the centre of the image, I felt that this would bring more emphasis on her and make her dominant in the picture.

Shot type: Long shot

Description: In this image the star is sat in a pose that makes her look very dominant, by doing this it shows she is a female that can look affter herself which will make the article appear as a more interesting read. The background to this image draws in at the back to bring attention to the star in the centre, also the arches let in light adding contrast tot he image. The star is wearing her cardigan just off the shoulder to add sexual attraction which will gain consumers, also she is in direct mode of address which connects her to the reader.

Editing: In the editing process I brightened up the colours and cropped off the bottom because there was a big space which would be hard to fill.

Conventions of a music magazine:

The left side third rule says that when consumers buy a magazine they always go to the left side first, this is because many people read from left to right. so when creating the products all of the important information that is going to attract attention from potential consumers it is placed on the left because the eyes travel here first.

Front cover:
  • Name of magazine, masthead
  • Main image
  • Main cover line
  • Anchorage text

  • selling line
  • bar code

Magazine layout ideas:

FRONT COVER
The masthead has been placed here for a number of reasons, the first being that it follows the conventions of already successful music magazines who place their masthead here. Secondly is the fact that in the Western worl we read text from left to right, I would like my magazine to be published in western culture countries so that is why I placed it here. I have also included anchorage text which will like to main image in the centre and puffs to generate attention to the magazine.

CONTENTS PAGE
The contents page is of a similar layout to 'Blender' magazines contents page, I have taken this inspiration because the magazine is of the same genre as mine. I have also split the articles into cover stories and features so that they are easier to locate.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
This layout follows the conventions of popular double page spreads such as the ones you would commonly find in magazines such as NME, this is because I think this layout is successful as it is simple and not to over powering.

I have used this front cover from 'BLENDER' magazine to give me inspiration for my magazines's front cover. This is because I like the colour scheme and think that the text has been placed in a successful framework, also the masthead is memorable which is key in a high standard magazine.

I think that the colours used on the front cover represent two different sides, the pink being the good side and the black being the dark sie. Becaus my magazine is based on a similar theme I have used the pink as the good side and the red as the dark side which connects with the title 'Rumour', this is because Rumours are associated as being negative stories about an individual.

Also in my final artefacts I have used fonts such as 'Dotum' and Balloonist' throught the front cover, I chose these fonts because I felt they stuck to the genre beind my magazine but also weren't to in your face or what I would call cheesy. With this in mind I then went on to us the same fonts on my contents page to keep it in relation with the front cover and stick to the same themes throught my magazine. However on the double page spread I decided to broaden my font range and go for something slightly different, therefore on this product I used three types of font. None of them were srangely different from the other but I felt it gave my article that extra edge to make it look professional, but also it would draw the readers attention to certain aspects such as quotes.

Content:  The content in my magazine has been used on urpose due to the information I gathered when I created a survey, the results concluded that consumers most like to buy magazines that include intervews, pictures and reviews. Therefore I made sure that my contents page listed all of these features, then I also decided that my double page spread was going to be an interview because it was the most successful way to attract consumers. Also the magazine is called 'Rumour' which suggests to the consumer that there is going to be gossip within the magazine, I made sure that I included this article on he contents page but on the flip side and interview reveals truth and exclusivity. something I can possitively say is a unique selling point to my magazine.

Process of making the final artifacts:

Front cover: 1) Choosing an image appropriate for the front cover
                    2) Manipulating th image so that it fit in with the codes and conventions of the magazine
                          3) Adding the masthead, anchorage text etc. choosing the right font and colour scheme
                   4) Making the final changes to font size and text location

Contents page: 1) Selecting a range of images appropriate for the page
                         2) deciding where the text would be located and what font to use.
                         3) splitting the articles up into cover stories and features then numbering pages
                         4) making final adjustments such as font colour and placement of images

Double page spread: 1) The layout of the double page spread was a time consuming decision
                                  2) selecting and manipulating the images so that they were successful
                                  3) creating the article and a storyline for the basis of the article
                                  4) making changes to the title block and font colours and size

Final artifacts and ideas not used:

Front cover-

I dedcided not to use this as the front cover because it needed changing in a few areas. These were things like the font, on this attempt the font size was too small and not bold enough. The banner at the top wasn't bright enough to attract attention because it had no block colour behind it. Also the logo on this attempt wasn's quite big enough and lastly I forgot to add a price to the issue.

The main reason why i didnt use this attempt as my final product was because I had used two images of the same person, when I looked back at other magazines the general system was that they used images of a variety of solo artists or bands. Therefore I decided that it would be best for me to use an image of someone else to create a sense of diversity in my work.

Looking back at this attempt I decided not to use it because of the colours being a main problem, the colour and range of contrast of the image made it very hard to find a font colour suitable. Because of this it was very hard to read the text making it an unsuccessful attempt, I also found by using this image it difficult to know here exactly to locate the text so that it stuck to the conventions of a music magazine.
